ESnet5 Deployment Team, Energy Department
Big data is more than a buzz word to the team behind the Energy Department's fifth generation Energy Sciences Network. It's the driving force behind their work.
The national network, which rolled out Nov. 12 is capable of carrying 100 gigabits per second--10 times as much data as the previous network. Serving the national labs, this enhanced capacity will advance the increasingly data-intensive and collaborative work being done at experimental sites and supercomputing centers across the country.
The expert execution of this science-enabling project is also worth noting. The team tested a prototype 100 gigabit network in November 2011, and began planning for new equipment and software in January 2012--all while ensuring the 10 gigbit network remained resilient.
Many scientific collaborations will benefit from the new network. For example, it will help the international climate research community share datasets and researchers worldwide access results from Large Hadron Collider experiments.
