Sophie Raseman, Director for Smart Disclosure, Treasury Department
![]()
When Sophie Raseman became director of smart disclosure at the Treasury Department in 2009, she wasn't filling a long-standing position with a well-known job description. Rather than just filling a role, she's helped create and define a new one, driven by what her peers say is a genuine passion for taking personal data and making it available in a machine readable format. Being able to get objective feedback about matters such as personal energy consumption or health aren't ends in themselves, Raseman knows, but pathways for individuals to make decisions.
From her Treasury perch--she's also been co-chair of a White House task force on smart disclosure since its mid-2011 formation--Raseman has pushed for smart disclosure to migrate from outlier to expected norm.
Raseman's role has been to capitalize on individual agency initiatives such as the Veterans Affairs Department's Blue Button initiative and unify the thinking behind those efforts, as well as codify them into standard practice. It's a job that's required outreach and initative over a prolonged period.
