Spotlight: Fitch may downgrade U.S. credit rating
Fitch Ratings said Jan. 16 it may downgrade the U.S. credit rating, The Wall Street Journal reports. And it might do so even if lawmakers raise the debt ceiling before the government runs out of money to pay all its bills--if no steps are taken to reduce long-term debt.
Fitch currently rates U.S. debt at triple-A, its highest rating. According to the article, that would also be in jeopardy if the United States continues to pay the interest on its debt but halts payments on other government obligations.
